Advancing sustainable, user-centered mobility with automated vehicles
The transport sector today finds itself at a crossroads when it comes to the deployment of automated vehicles (AVs). In recent years, numerous projects and initiatives have tested and deployed AVs in public transport, but large-scale deployment of automated shared fleets that are commercially viable has yet to be achieved.
By taking a holistic approach to AV deployment that considers all elements in a cross-sector business environment, ULTIMO aims to really unlock the integration of AVs in cities with on-demand and door-to-door services that will enable more sustainable, accessible and inclusive mobility. The ULTIMO project will build on previous experiences and projects, focusing on the barriers that stand in the way of large-scale AV adoption, including economic challenges.
ULTIMO will deploy electric vehicles at three sites in Europe, with at least 15 multi-vendor vehicles per site. The aim is to target operation without a safety driver on board, in fully automated mode and with the support of innovative, user-centric passenger services.
ULTIMO's innovative transport models are designed to have a long-term, sustainable impact on automated transport in Europe, worldwide and on society as a whole. The composition of the consortium guarantees interoperability between the various stakeholders, enabling the adoption of new technologies at minimum cost and with maximum safety, while the integration of ongoing experience from previous AV demonstrator projects ensures the highest possible technical and societal impact from the very start of the project - and even long after its completion.
