Energy performance of transformation processes in plastics engineering
In the context of strained energy markets and with the increasing threat of energy shortages and black-outs, the objective of the project is to help companies in the plastics processing industry optimize their energy consumption. The capacity to modulate consumption in relation to supply can result in significant energy savings and in more eco-friendly production processes.
Through analysis of existing technology and experimentation with proposed improvements in the iRAP laboratory at the School of Engineering and Architecture of Fribourg (HEIA-FR), the project will identify and implement optimizations to the production operations of participating companies. Partner company employees will also be trained in a methodology to enable the transition towards energy-efficient forms of production.
As the part of the factory with the biggest energy consumption, the production line also holds the greatest potential for energetic optimization. The project’s innovation lies in its experimentation with a variety of parameters while measuring their correlation with the energy impact. Our partner companies will acquire valuable know-how in the monitoring, evaluation and optimization of production operations in terms of energy efficiency.
