This 3-day training course will provide the fundamentals in upstream processing with hands-on practical and theory on bioreactors used for microbial cell cultures.
The general aims of this training course are to enable a non-expert in the field of upstream processing:
- To be able to understand and perform the main upstream process steps
- To be able to understand and perform monitoring of the growth of cells
- To be able to understand the different modes of cell culture (batch, fed-batch, chemostat, perfusion)
- To have the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge to know what types of bioreactors to use at which stage of a process and for what purpose
- To be able to set-up a bioreactor, to sterilize a bioreactor, to inoculate a bioreactor under sterile conditions and to monitor the progress of cell growth and metabolites production during cell culture
- To provide the basis for more advanced studies to become an expert in the field (if desired)
- To enable people in DSP to transfer to USP
This training program includes practical parts with the growth of bacteria in flasks and bioreactors. The theory of cell growth, seed train development, bioreactors and their sterilization will be addressed. The modes of operation (batch, fed-batch, continuous and perfusion), substrate feeding, process monitoring and control techniques will be reviewed and discussed. Cell harvest and primary recovery will also be introduced.
Who should attend?
This course is aimed for operators, technicians, scientists, specialists in other areas, and managers in the field of biomanufacturing who are interested to learn more about the upstream processing, to refresh their knowledge in the field, or to facilitate cross-training.
What are the learning outcomes?
- Understand cell growth kinetics under optimal growth conditions in a bioreactor
- Use in-process controls to monitor cell growth and metabolites
- Cultivate microbial cells (bacteria) in bioreactors
- Have an in-depth understanding of the design, function and characterization of bioreactors
- Understand the different mode of operation of a bioreactor in batch, Fed-batch, continuous and perfusion mode
- Understand the main steps during cell harvest and primary recovery
How is the course structured?
The course is a mixture of interactive presentations and hands-on practical work in a GMP-like environment. Practical work will be carried out in small groups with a maximum of 3 people per group to ensure hands-on experiences at all time.
